This music is not meant for listening. Its purpose is strictly performance. A tool to use for djs to create the illusion of a live techno set or song. Most of the music was recorded using the MPC live into fl studio. Every song is a live performance of that song, nothing was arranged via a daw or an arranger. This gives a spontaneous feel to each song. There are also Mistakes and moments where I do unpredictable things. There are moments where I negotiate timing unlike formulated arrangements. The arrangements are based on how I would play these songs live at a party.

My practice of improvisation is based on my understanding of Pan African traditions of music where there are rules to how each pattern is formed in regards to a particular invocation, particular spirit, particular worship, particular moment in time, particular season, particular element, particular persons. These rules are structures that are strong but hold space for expression like adding a beat to a rhythm or adding a run of a scale between the cadences, or adding voicings to harmonies not written or in the oral traditions.

The practice of improvising is not favorable to distribution. It creates a conundrum where you will never have the product. It’s archival and shared culture through going to the club and hearing my sets. This is only a snapshot in time. This is not the final product.

Drapetomania is the condition we all suffer from. A notion that being in captivity is the normative forced to work and be exploited by our masters. Drapetomania was a mental condition drawn up to describe the mental state of runaway slaves.
I wonder what the treatment was?
My purpose of the Drapetomania tapes is to explore the idea of labor in relationship to music in relationship to consumption in relationship to greater freedoms. I want to welcome and embrace the neurodivergence of those who suffer from this condition and help them cope with the fact you will never be free 🙃
